1 - London Scenes
The first True-View roll packet, so the first to be added here. Not the most imaginative start - standard "London" subjects, some having very limited depth. They do get better later, though. Captions reproduce the original, odd punctuation and all. Click on each image to get a larger version to view.
The Views
View 1
The Houses of Parliament, known as the New Palace of Westminster, was built in 1840-50, on the site of the former palace destroyed by fire in 1834.
View 2
Westminster Abbey, one of the most beautiful examples of Early English architecture. This view shows the stately West Entrance, leading into the Nave.

The Royal Courts of Justice, more familiarly called the Law Courts, an imposing Gothic pile in the Strand, erected in 1874-82.

Buckingham Palace, residence of British sovereigns since the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837.

Piccadilly Circus - "The Heart of the World" with the lovely bronze fountain of the Shaftesbury memorial, surmounted by the figure of Eros, in the centre.

Marble Arch - the site of Tyburn Gallows. Originally the arch stood before Buckingham Palace, and was removed to its present site in 1850-51.

Trafalgar Square, showing Nelson's Column and the National Gallery. The fluted granite column 185 feet high is crowned by a colossal statue of Lord Nelson.

St. Martin's in the Fields, built in 1721-26 by James Gibbs, and considered to be his finest work. To the left is the Coliseum, and to the right a portion of South Africa House.

The Horse Guards' Parade, lying behind Whitehall, scene of the famous Trooping of the Colour on the King's official birthday.

County Hall, seat of London's Municipal Government, a modern massive Renaissance style edifice with a river frontage of 750 feet.

St. Paul's Cathedral, masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren, showing the South Transept and the massive dome 112 feet in diameter, surmounted by the ball and cross, 365 ft. high.

Tower Bridge - gateway to the Pool of London, constructed 1886-94 at a cost of £800,000. The two bascules, each weigh 1,000 tons and can be raised in 1½ minutes..
